Jefferson Parish officials urged residents on Thursday not to place bulky waste items curbside for collection until the storm threat passes.

Residents are asked to limit the items they place at the curb on Friday and Saturday to household garbage and trash, according to a news release.

Household garbage and trash includes food, diapers, yard clippings and regular household waste. Bulky waste includes medium or large tree limbs and logs, furniture, construction debris, household appliances, bags of clothing, carpet and carpet padding.

Waste Management will provide garbage collection in Jefferson Parish and Lafitte on its regularly scheduled routes on Friday and Saturday, officials said.

History has shown that in the days prior to a potential storm event, residents tend to place exceptional volumes of garbage and debris at the curb, officials said.

Large items and bulky waste items left at the curb during a storm could create hazards for homes and automobiles in high winds, officials said. Residents are urged to hold any large, bulky waste until the next scheduled pick up day after the storm threat has passed.

In the event of a storm, parish officials and Waste Management encourage all residents and businesses to secure their garbage cans and other trash containers in a safe location. All loose trash, such as tree limbs, should be bundled, tied down and placed in a location where the debris cannot be exposed to high winds.
