POYDRAS, La. -- An 18-year-old trying to get into a St. Bernard Parish bar without proper ID shot and killed two men who wouldn't let him in, Sheriff Jack Stevens said Friday. The shooting at the Barracuda Bar in Poydras happened at about 6:15 p.m. Thursday. The bar is located in the 7900 block of East St. Bernard Highway.Deputies have charged 18-year-old Anthony Hookfin with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting deaths of 51-year-old Michael Whitehead and 41-year-old David Ward.
"The detectives picked up Hookfin at about 4 a.m. this morning, and he confessed and it was really with the cooperation of the patrons at the bar and the citizens in the area that led to the arrest," Stephens said.Stevens said the shooting happened after a dispute near the entrance of the bar. Hookfin had not shown proper identification, and the other men wouldn't let him in. That's when Hookfin pulled out a gun and shot them, Stevens said."What provoked this episode was a disagreement with a young man that had gone in and was challenged as to not having the proper credentials showing that he was old enough to be in the bar," Stephens said. One of the men died at the scene; the other was taken to Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans, where he later died. The gun used in the shooting has not been recovered."He claims that he threw the weapon in the river, but we're not sure about that yet," said St. Bernard Chief Detective John Doran.Police said they do plan to search for the gun. This was the sixth homicide in St. Bernard Parish this year -- a higher number than in past years. Investigators have solved five of the six homicides.
