NEW ORLEANS -- Young Carl Barre spends a lot of time on 4 West, the Children's Hospital cancer ward. For a lot of kids and their families, time seems to stand still."Especially (for) older kids like Carl, it's sometimes hard to keep them entertained as opposed to the younger ones that are a little bit easier," said Lynn Winfield with Children's Hospital. Also no stranger to Children's Hospital is renowned local artist Michael Hunt. His idea was to put a computer game console in each of clinic's chemotherapy bays, plus a couple of mobile units on the ward.
His 14-year-old son Cameron took the design lead, contacting all the big game companies, including Wii, Xbox, Gameboy. All agreed to put selected games together in one unit."They are all family friendly so that they can play with the other kids, and they can play with their family members," Hunt said. "It's really important so they know they are not going it alone."One of the game consoles came in not-so-standard-issue purple and gold. LSU head coach Les Miles lent a hand in funding the project. Hunt designed a brand new Tiger lithograph, and Miles hand signed 5,000 of them. All proceeds from the sale of the art go to the project."We're going to raise enough money that we are going to build six of these gaming units, which is going to take no time at all," Hunt said.An awful lot of hearts had to be in the right place to make this project come together, including young Carl's. And if you ask him, it's a hit.If you want to know how you can get one of the hand-signed LSU lithographs designed by Michael Hunt, go to lsulitho.com.Posters can be purchased, as long as supplies last, by calling the Michael Hunt Studio at 800-426-1379.For the next three days, the posters can be purchased at half price, or $75.
