New Orleans Beauty Shop Becomes 'Book Nook'
A support group for minority full-time mothers said on Saturday that it hopes to make a big difference for children across the city. The New Orleans chapter of Mocha Moms Inc. has set up reading stations in 10 New Orleans-area beauty shops and barber parlors. The idea is to bring books to spots where children are likely to come with their parents, giving them a place to read or listen to books.Founding member Ty Salvant said she and other mothers were appalled by statistics about low reading levels for African-American boys, in particular.
The New Orleans Public Library, the African-American Resource Center and the national Mocha Moms organization donated books and money for the project.
