Suspect In Officer's Shooting Linked To DA's Girlfriend

Police Report Says Jordan's Girlfriend Spent Day In Baton Rouge With Suspect

A robbery suspect who stopped at District Attorney Eddie Jordan's house after a car wreck is also suspected of being involved in the shooting of a New Orleans police officer, Chief Warren Riley confirmed.

Jordan had denied that his girlfriend, Cheri Robinson, knew Elton Phillips.

However, Robinson later said she got a ride back to New Orleans from Baton Rouge with him.

"I know his grandmother, I know the family," she said.

Phillips is being sought in the shooting of Thelonious Dukes, an off-duty detective who was injured at his New Orleans East home during a robbery Oct. 13.

Dukes was pulling into his driveway when two armed men came up and forced him into his house.

Once inside the house, Dukes was able to get his gun, and he and the gunmen were involved in a shootout. Dukes was shot twice -- once in the leg and once in the stomach. His wife was shot in the foot.

"We're not quite sure if he's the gunman, but we know that he's involved in this. We are searching for him as a suspect because we do know that he is involved in this situation," Riley said.

Jordan identified Phillips as the man who came to his Algiers home Oct. 12 asking for help after a car wreck a few blocks away.

"I immediately got in touch with police after I saw his picture on the television," Jordan said.

Phillips is also suspected of robbing a person at gunpoint at a gas station on Gen. Degaulle Drive, taking cash, jewelry and a cell phone from the victim.

According to a police report, Phillips dropped off Robinson at the home she and Jordan share just minutes before the robbery.

Robinson said Phillips was frantic when he arrived at their house.

"He was crying, he was falling out, and I said, 'Oh my god.' I'm a mother, I would hope someone would help my son if he rang someone's doorbell in distress," Robinson said.

Jordan contacted Riley about Phillips, the report said. But it also stated Jordan didn't respond to detective working the case for three days.
